Humantay Lake is located northwest of the city of Cusco, near the Salkantay and Humantay mountains. It stands out as one of the most beautiful places to visit in Cusco, due to its unique blue and green waters.

This tour is perfect for those who love trekking and nature. This lake is also visited by shamans, who leave offerings to the mother earth or  “Pachamama”. Indeed, some small stone structures known as “Apachetas” can be found on the shores of the lake.

Originally, Humantay Lake was only visited as part of the 5 days Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. However, it is possible to visit Humantay Lake in just one day. Most day tours start with a car trip of 120 km (74.6 miles)  from Cusco to Soraypampa town. The day trip then follows a  short trek of around 1.5 hours to the lake.

The trek to the lake has moderate difficulty. To avoid altitude sickness, it is recommended to spend some days in Cusco city. There are numerous hotels in Cusco to rest and prepare for your trek. By doing this, you help your body to adapt to the high altitude environment of the region.

If you are not in good physical shape, then riding a horse is a great option to visit Humantay Lake. Horse rentals are available in Soraypampa town. Also, it is not recommended to take the trek without a tour guide.
