Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days

The Salkantay Trek is one of Peru’s most famous hiking trails. It has a total length of approximately 70 km (43 miles). The hiking trail passes near Salkantay mountain, the second highest mountain in Cusco.
The Salkantay Mountain has an altitude of 6271 m.a.s.l. (20574 f.a.s.l.). The Salkantay trek’s highest point is the Salkantay Pass located at 4650 m.a.s.l. (15255 f.a.s.l.). During the trek it is possible to spot different animal species, such as llamas, alpacas, vizcachas, and condors.
The Salkantay Trek has moderate difficulty. It is not designed for expert mountain climbers. Anyone with moderate physical shape can complete the whole hiking trail. However, before taking this trip, it is recommended to spend some days in Cusco city to avoid suffering from altitude sickness.
Our Salkantay Trek includes camping equipment, first aid kit, entrance tickets to Machu Picchu, and train tickets from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.

Day 1
Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 6:00 am. Afterwards, we will drive to Mollepata town. After having breakfast, our adventure travel will begin.
We will be ascending for almost 7 hours. We will pass the Humantay Lagoon to arrive at the Soraypampa campsite. Once there, we will have lunch and prepare for the next day. During the first day, we will have walked around 16 km (9.9 miles).
Day 2
Soraypampa – Huayracmachay – Collpapampa
The second day is the most difficult part of the trek. After having breakfast, we will pass the Salkantay Abra, a mountain pass located at 4650 m.a.s.l. (15255 f.a.s.l.). This place is the highest point of the Salkantay trek.
Afterwards, we will descend to Huayracmachay where we will have lunch. Then, we will hike for around 3 hours to Collpapampa. Here, we will camp for the next day. On the second day, we will have walked around 22 km (13.7 miles).
Day 3
Collpapampa – Playa Sahuayaco – Santa Teresa
After having breakfast, we will descend towards “Playa Sahuayaco”. Once there, we will have lunch. Then, we will continue our journey to Santa Teresa town, where we will visit the famous hot springs of Cocalmayo. We will spend the night in Santa Teresa.
On the third day we will have walked around 16 km (9.94 miles). This day is considered the easiest of the Salkantay Trek. The region surrounding Santa Teresa is located in the high jungles of Cusco. So, you will be passing through numerous cloud forests while hiking.
Day 4
Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes
We will leave Santa Teresa after breakfast. We will walk to the Hidroelectrica station, where we will have lunch. Then, we will walk along the railways to Aguas Calientes town. Once there, our staff will transfer you to your hotel room.
On the fourth day, we will have walked around 16 km (9.94 miles).
Day 5
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
On the final day, we will wake up early in the morning to have breakfast. Next, we will hike from Aguas Calientes towards the citadel of Machu Picchu. After passing the security checkpoints, you will enter Machu Picchu.
Then, our guided tour of Machu Picchu will start. You will visit the incredible stone buildings of this ancient Inca citadel. We will explore the Main Temple, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Temple of the Condor, and much more. If you booked a ticket to Huayna Picchu, or Machu Picchu mountain, our staff will guide you to the entrance. During our guided tour, you will get amazing views of Machu Picchu.
Afterwards, we will return to Aguas Calientes. You will have free time to have lunch at a local restaurant. Finally, we will catch a train to Ollantaytambo town. Once there, our staff will transfer you to Cusco city. We will arrive in Cusco around 9:00 pm.
