Huchuy Qosqo Trek from Cusco
Tour Details
Huchuy Qosqo is an archeological site located 5 km from Calca town, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. According to the Spanish chroniclers, Huchuy Qosqo was built during the reign of Inca Wiraqocha. The site served as a resting place for the Inca royalty.
Huchuy Qosqo means “Little Cusco”. Its layout resembles the city of Cusco before the reign of Inca Pachacutec. The site also has other names. One of them is Qaqyaqhawana, which means “the place from where lighting can be seen”.
The archaeological complex is surrounded by numerous terraces that were used to perform religious ceremonies. Also, there are two main buildings in Huchuy Qosqo. The first one is a three level building made of stone and mud bricks. The second one is a large rectangular building with many doors oriented to the Sacred Valley.
Also, there are many smaller buildings scattered around Huchuy Qosqo. They served as outposts and houses. However, most of these Inca ruins are partially or completely destroyed.
We recommend you to visit the Huchuy Qosqo ruins during the dry season. During the rainy season the trail becomes slippery and difficult to walk. Additionally, it is recommended to spend some days in Cusco city before attempting any trek. It helps you to avoid suffering from altitude sickness.
This high altitude trek crosses the Andes mountain range. So, you will need to wear appropriate clothes for the trek, including hiking boots. We can also rent you walking sticks for an extra cost.
