On this half day tour, you will explore the beautiful Salt Mines of Maras and the archaeological site of Moray. This tour is a different approach to the classic Maras and Moray tour. You will be riding a bike through the beautiful landscapes of the Sacred Valley. 

Maras has around 3000 salt ponds, which are located among the rugged Andean mountains. These salt ponds produced the famous pink salt of Maras (“Sal rosada de Maras”), a rare and appreciated ingredient in the Peruvian cuisine. The salt mines of Maras stand out for its natural beauty, which creates the perfect background for taking photographs. 

It is important to know that the salt mines of Maras are not salt flats. Salt flats are the result of the evaporation of watersheds. This process leaves salt and other minerals behind. In contrast, Maras salt comes from underground mineral waters, not from a watershed. 

This bike tour also includes the Moray archaeological site. Moray is often mistaken as some kind of Inca amphitheater. However, its circular terraces had an agricultural purpose. They were used to grow plants from other climates. These plants included the coca leaves, which are still used in some Andean religious ceremonies.

Maras is not included in the Cusco Tourist Ticket. So, you will need to purchase an additional entrance ticket to visit the Maras Salt Mines.
